MAC GUIDE
Hear your Discord chats aloud.
Discord can read new messages aloud on its own. To catch up on a chat that’s already on your screen, and hear it like a conversation, you need a reader.
BUILT INTO DISCORD
Discord’s text-to-speech.
Discord has its own text-to-speech settings. On a Mac, it uses your Mac’s system voice.
- Text-to-speech notifications read new messages aloud as they arrive. You can turn them on for all channels or only the channel you have open.
- The /tts command sends a message that’s read aloud to people in the channel who allow it.
Discord moves these settings from time to time. Its Text-to-Speech help page shows where they are now.
COMPUTER READS PRETTY
Read a chat like a conversation.
- Select the messages you want to hear in Discord.
- Press ⌃⇧R (Control-Shift-R).
Computer Reads Pretty cleans up the chat before it reads it:
- It says “Alex says:” instead of reading timestamps.
- It skips emoji.
- It turns @mentions and links into something you’d actually want to hear.
You can turn off each of these in Settings. Each word lights up as it’s read, and the chat goes into your Playlist for later.
WHICH TO USE
Use both.
- Discord’s notifications are good for hearing new messages as they arrive while you do something else.
- Computer Reads Pretty is good for catching up on a conversation that’s already on your screen.
